21st Annual Meeting of the Lees Pond Association
The meeting was called to order at 10:50 by President Bev Nelson at the home of Jim and Bev Nelson. Present were: Bob and Donna Clark, Fred and Candace Cox, Ken and Barbara Ganem, Pat Hajny, Ed and Jane Harrington, Jim and Peggy Hoburg, Jim and Beverly Nelson, Keith and Karin Nelson, Roland and Paula Young.
ANDREA LAMOREAUX OF THE NEW HAMPSHIRE LAKES ASSOCIATION
Andrea explained that the purpose of non-profit NH Lakes founded in 1992 is to protect the lakes and watersheds of New Hampshire. There are 936 water bodies over 10 acres. They have a great impact on our quality of life and the economy. The organization tries to educate and advocate; use sound science; and collaborate with legislatures, state agencies, municipalities, conservation groups, students, and business.
Storm water runoff is a big concern of NH Lakes. Impervious surfaces such as driveways and parking lots remove the natural sponge of the soil and release contaminants such as pet waste, motor oil, pesticides, and salt into the watershed and into lakes and ponds. Even a straight sandy path can release sand plus phosphorus into the water. One study found that a 1 meter decrease in clarity leads to an 8-16% decrease in property values. Property owners are not aware that there are fairly inexpensive ways to correct these problems.
NH Lakes has showcase projects in over 10 communities that show how to vegetate and infiltrate to restore a property. First they inventory the site to identify the problem. Next it is important to know the rules such as the NH Surfaces Water Quality Protection Act. Then they produce a plan and budget. We saw slides of before and after photos of many projects. In many cases, students are employed to do the work.
Andrea passed out the SHORELAND HOMEOWNERS GUIDE TO STORMWATER MANAGEMENT that outlines various methods to control water runoff on a property. Contact WWW.NHLAKES.COM or call 603-226-0299.
20TH ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES WERE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED
TREASURER’S REPORT July 1, 2011 to July 1, 2012
Total income $1,725.00 from dues
Total expenses 400.00 water testing
Overall total $1,325.00
GRANT
Bev obtained a grant to buy equipment to do more sophisticated water testing. There may be a small expense to replace materials.
MILFOIL TREATMENT
A herbicide treatment is planned for July 17 at the North end of the pond plus the cove in front of Anita McMullin’s house. There is too much weed at the North end to pull and some of it is in the lilies. The cove acts as a catch basin for the floaters that come from the North end. Bob Patterson pulled a small amount of milfoil from the outlet, around the island, Hajny’s cove, and the boat launch. He also cleared the barrier. We are definitely making progress. There is no milfoil in the river. If we can remove the milfoil from the North end, then just checking the pond every year and a minor amount of pulling should keep it under control. Everyone can help by cleaning the shoreline in front of your house, picking up floaters, marking milfoil, and cleaning the barrier.
WATER QUALITY
The water is tested in June, July, and August. There is not much change from last year. Bev Nelson will be happy to Email detailed charts to anyone who is interested. Please fill out the septic survey if you have not already done so.
BOB CLARK’S REPORT
Michael and Bianca Dion purchased property at the North end of the pond on Route 25 for their business Dion’s Plant Place and possibly a home on the pond. Michael Lees bought property next to the access road for parking. 37 acres are for sale for $795,000 bordering on Route 25, the Red Hill River, and Lees Pond. It is zoned commercial and residential. All efforts to try to get a conservation commission to buy this property have failed. 1.2 acres is for sale at the South end of the pond for $249,000.
Bob investigated dredging the pond since it is filling in at the North end. A survey would have to be done, and it would probably be necessary to drain the pond. Of course, we would have to have a permit from the State. Unless a cause could be found for sediment buildup, the dredging might have to be done again. No cost estimate was given at this time.
Thank you Bob for all of your information.
